An Interview with a Reporter on the Thoughts of Yongsan Buddhism-8
In most Buddhist temples, salvation
services for the deceased parents and
ancestors to heaven are being performed at
present. I understand that Hyonjisa also
emphasizes the salvation service. Please tell
us what differences there are between the
salvation service of the true Dharma of
Hyonjisa and that of other temples?
The salvation service is the highest filial piety
of sending to heavens the spiritual bodies of one's
deceased parents and ancestors who are
extremely suffering, after having fallen inton the
evil destinies such as hell, animals, etc. Those
who wish to realize a great purpose in the world
and further to attain a great achievement through
practice must put this filial piety into practice.
While his ancestors are suffering, how can a
person alone live a happy life? If you look around
yourselves carefully, you will realize how happily
those who are devoted to their ancestors live.
But unfortunately the salvation services which
are being performed in other temples at present
cannot actually save deceased parents and
ancestors to heaven. I will tell you the reasons. In
order to save the deceased spirits, they must be
brought to the place where the Dharma seat is,
but the problem is that the monk who performs
the salvation service does not have such power as
the Buddha. No one is aware of where the
deceased parents and ancestors have gone after
passing away; where and how can the monk bring
the deceased spirits who have gone to the realms
of hell, hungry ghosts, or animals? Also, if a
monk wants to save deceased spirits to heaven, he
must have the ability to bring Ksitigarbha
Bodhisattva to the Dharma seat for a salvation
service, but if he is not a Buddha, he is unable to
do so. Searching and bringing the deceased spirits,
and salvation to the deva realm are so difficult
like this. Consequently, perfect salvation to
heaven cannot be realized with the salvation
services held in other temples at present.
The salvation services held at Hyonjisa are
supervised by the Buddha. When the Buddha
cannot be present, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
supervises instead. As a result, every time a
salvation service is held, the status of deceased
spirits is normally promoted by one grade. No
salvation service is supervised by the Buddha
anywhere in the world besides Hyonjisa.
Hyonjisa has already saved tens of thousands of
deceased spirits to heavens from the evil realms. I
can sum up the special features and strong points
of historically unprecedented salvation services of
Hyonjisa as follows:
① Our salvation service is the only one in the
global village that is supervised by the Buddha,
and that the Great Monk who has attained
Buddhahood searches anf brings the deceased
spirits personally; attends the service; and says
prayers of blessings. He saves at a time around 80
deceased spirits of the ancestors within the four
family lines and the above four generations of the
father's and mother's sides of the person himself
and his spouse.
② The Great Monk makes clear where these
spirits are at the moment (hells, forlorn
wandering spirits, animals, etc.) after passing
away, and completes searching and bringing them
to our temple for a salvation service.
③ The Buddha washes away karmic
hindrance of those who are present as well as the
family representative of a salvation service,
thinking highly of his filial piety.
④ The Buddha sends holy multitudes to the
house of the representative and cleans it up
spiritually.
⑤ The Buddha completely saves all the
deceased spirits of the family to heavens through
four salvation services.
⑥ After a week or so, the family representative
can confirm the results where the deceased spirits
have been saved after going through special re-
examination.
⑦ Impure energy left behind by the deceased
spirits in the place where a salvation service was
held will be cleaned up, and contrarily the temple
hall will be far purer than before.
I understand that the Great Monk strongly
recommends prenatal education that
Avalokiteshvara has taught for cultivation of
men of ability of this country. What is the
difference between prenatal education by
virtue of Avalokiteshvara and ordinary
prenatal education?
Avalokiteshvara prenatal education is a method
of prenatal education that Avalokiteshvara
manifested and has asked me to spread far and
wide. This has distinctly been based on the
Gateway to Every Direction Manifested by
Avalokiteshvara in the Lotus Sutra. The different
kinds of prenatal educations that have been
performed in different countries have all been
prenatal educations by self-power, but the main
difference is that the prenatal education by virtue
of Avalokiteshvara is a prenatal education by
other power that receives immeasurable awesome
spiritual powers of Avalokiteshvara.
Prenatal education by virtue of Avalokiteshvara
is an innovative prenatal education method on a
higher level that can produce the pillar of a nation
with both excellent ability and saintly personality
by karmic hindrance of the spiritual bodies in an
embryo child (a fetus) being washed away by
Avalokiteshvara.
The method is first to read the Gateway to
Every Direction Manifested by Avalokiteshvara;
next to read or recite Buljongshim
Avalokiteshvara Mo-dharani; and then to recite
Gwanse-um Bosal (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva). The
simplest way is to chant Avalokiteshvara (Gwanse-
um Bosal in Korean), passing her hand over her belly
whenever she has time; and pray to have such
such child that the mother wishes.
The prenatal education by virtue of
Avalokiteshvara is an epochal prenatal education
method that can promote development of our
nation by bringing up the most competitive men
of ability in the country where it is poor in natural
resources. Hence, this prenatal education is what
the nation has to recommend in the positive
manner. Also, our education policy must be
changed daringly to the direction of laying stress
on prenatal education and children-oriented
education from now on.
